What Is Seed Phrase (Recovery Phrase)?
Definition
A seed phrase is a 12 or 24-word sequence that serves as the master backup for a crypto wallet — anyone with these words can access all funds in the wallet.
When you create a crypto wallet (Phantom, MetaMask, etc.), it generates a seed phrase — a sequence of 12 or 24 English words in a specific order. This phrase is mathematically linked to all the private keys your wallet will ever generate.
- Never share your seed phrase with anyone — no legitimate service will ever ask for it
- Never enter it on a website — CoinDevTools NEVER asks for your seed phrase
- Write it down physically — paper or metal, stored securely offline
- Don't screenshot or store digitally — phones and cloud storage can be hacked
If you lose access to your wallet (phone lost, browser extension deleted), the seed phrase lets you restore full access to all your tokens from any compatible wallet app. Without it, your funds are permanently lost — no company can recover them.
CoinDevTools is non-custodial: we never see, store, or have access to your seed phrase or private keys. You sign transactions with your own wallet.
